Summary

Planting kale; types of basket; pack saddles.

The contributor explains planting and working kale seed in a crub [small stone enclosure]. Sometimes the kale was sown by spitting it with a mouthful of water.

Seed for sowing was carried in a keshie [woven basket]. Keshies were made from simmens [grass ropes] woven from tussock grass. Fish was carried in a buddie made from straw or docken and more rectangular in shape. Keshies were used for carrying practically anything including peats from the hill. The larger open-work meshie was used for carrying hay. Earlier, ponies with panniers were used for transport; the contributor describes the tack.
