Summary
Processing corn; growing kale; storing potatoes.
Corn was winnowed on a flackie [straw mat] in a barn with the doors open to allow a draft. Corn was flailed to separate the wheat from the chaff and the grains ground in the watermill. Hand-driven threshing mills were also used, but were no more efficient than flailing.
The contributor gives details of planting the permanent kaleyard after it was ploughed. He mentions some of the vegetables that were grown as well as kale. Tatties [potatoes] were kept inside and the excess stored in pits covered with turf or straw. The varieties were fewer and different from now [1970].
