Summary

In this song, a young woman yearns for her lover. Although her parents want her to marry a rich old man, she refuses, saying she will wait to be wed to her lover, even if it means living in poverty with him. She rejects all the gossip and talk about her and her lover, saying she'll "leave this counterie and follow my nice young man".

Maggie Stewart heard her mother sing this, and got the words later from Jane [Jean? - her sister-in-law, Jeannie Robertson?].
