Summary

Food in Mull: cereals.

The contributor had barley pudding twice a week. It was made with barley and good milk, and was left in the range overnight. It could be eaten hot or cold. The contributor preferred it cold. Barley was also put in broth. His mother made barley bread.

Oatcakes made from oatmeal, salt, and sometimes sugar, were always available in the house. The mixture was rolled and cut, and cooked on the girdle, and then in the oven. The oatcakes were sometimes toasted in front of the fire. Most families bought half a bag of oatmeal at a time. It was kept in a barrel.

Every farmhouse had a meal kist for flour, oatmeal and Indian meal. Scones were made from a mixture of flour and Indian meal.
