Summary
Seasonal customs, and outdoor pursuits on New Year's Day.
The New Year is more important in Scotland than Christmas. In Charlie Douglas's youth, there used to be rifle shooting, fox-hunting and ferreting for rabbits. When people met, they would exchange drams from their bottles. Groups of two or three, or even six or seven, would go first footing. They would have a sing-song, then move on to the next house. A dark-haired first foot is lucky.
At Christmas children went round singing carols. At Hallowe'en there was dooking for apples.
