Summary

Fragments of a music hall-era song in which two 'mashers' (young and fashionable men of the late Victorian era) brag about their antics.

Item Notes

1 verse of 8 lines with chorus of 4 lines.

This song would appear to have developed from the music hall into a wide spread series of oral adaptations; a great many localised variants exist, e.g. 'The Ashton Mashers', with others situated in Rochdale, Oldham, Fleetwood, Quarry Bank, Preston, and so on. A song named 'The Brothers Malone' may have been the original song, and is certainly related.
