Summary
People of Berneray stayed in sheilings on the small islands for peat cutting and fishing.
People stayed for a couple of days when they went to cut peats on the surrounding islands - Vacasay, Hermetray, Sartay and Obasay. They did not go to sheilings with cattle as the islands were too small. Fishermen also stayed in the bothies. The contributor stayed in a tent in Vacasay with her father when cutting peats. She tells an anecdote about her becoming homesick when she heard the people on nearby Hermetray Bible reading and singing. They used marram grass for bedding.
