Summary
Fishermen's taboos and superstitions.
Sandy Archibald spoke to local fishermen in dialect and got stories from them about their taboos and superstitions. No one was allowed to mention a salmon, a pig, or a rabbit on the boat. Mr Archibald suggests they might have been pre-Celtic gods. It was unlucky if a fisherman met a red-haired woman, a minister or a priest on the way to the boat. They observed going or not going widdershins [anti-clockwise] when taking the boat out of harbour. The fishermen did not know the meanings of these things.
