Summary

Treatment of pneumonia c. 1930.

When her daughter Lizzie was a baby, Jeannie Robertson had a major operation and developed theatre pneumonia [i.e. hospital-acquired pneumonia]. She was so far gone that the hospital had red screens around her, and placed her near the door, which she knew meant they were prepared to remove her from the ward if she died. She priggit [asked] the nurse for a drink of water but wasn't allowed any; she was given a mouthwash, and drank it. She was treated with poultices as well as injections, and was given brandy toddies.
