Summary

Pranks and divination at Halloween; rhyme recited by Hogmanay guisers.

At Halloween boys played pranks such as taking the wheels off carts and gates off their hinges. In the contributor's mother's time there was dooking for apples. Girls tried to predict their future husband by pulling up kail-runts [cabbage stalks]: if it had a lot of earth on it, that meant a rich man, and if it was big and straight the man would be tall and handsome. Boys went guising.

The rhyme recited by Hogmanay guisers was:

Get up, guid wife, and shak yer feathers,
And dinna think that we are beggars,
We're just bit bairns gan oot tae play,
Get up and gie's oor Hogmanay.
