Summary

Animal husbandry and the shieling.

As a boy, Duncan MacDonell's father went to the shieling [summer pasture with rough accommodation] in April. They took the cows there to calve. The women milked them and made butter and cheese. The reason was to save the grass at home, to keep the cows out of the crops, and to benefit from the grass on the hills. The bothies were made of turves with birch cover. The men came up with horses from time to time. Mr MacDonell has heard that they would put barrels of cream on either side of a horse, and by the time they got home the motion of the horse had turned it to butter.
