Summary

Reminiscences of Canna in the 19th century.

The contributor says there were 28 families on Canna when he was young; he gives an account of many of them towards end of interview. Canna was full of sheep, and there were many highland cattle. There were also some horses. The people made their own tweed; mention of spinning-wheel and waulking. The tailor, Ailean Tàilleir, came from Eigg. They did not go to the shielings in his day. Mention is made of: fishing, smuggling and gaugers - 'An Gèidsear Caimbeulach', who had a piper. Also the church, a flour-mill, press-gangs, and Mgr. Alasdair, the priest. Talk of previous owners of Canna such as MacNeil and Thom.
