Summary
Fairs and markets in Aberdeenshire and Banffshire.
The biggest feeing markets (where farm labourers were hired) were at Maud. There was also Muckle Friday Fair in Aberdeen, and the Rascal Fair, for men who had not been hired elsewhere. Aikey Fair was a big event on Sundays, but the Wednesday horse market no longer [1960] takes place. Aikey Fair started with a preacher. Hamish Henderson has heard of a piper going round the fairs with preachers. Other fairs included Brandon's Fair, John's Fair, Strichen market and Ellon feeing market. There was a song about Ellon feeing market by George Morris.
