Summary

Memories of Killin in the late 19th century; women's work.

There was no running water in the cottages in Killin when Bill Walker was a boy, just pumps outside. The women washed blankets in the River Dochart. There is a flat stone near Cameron's wool mill where the blankets were beaten, and there was a boiler there. When water came to the houses, they tramped the blankets in a tub outside the house. The women also tended the family cow and pig, and made their own candles, butter and cheese with caraway seeds in it.

Blankets and tweed were made in the local mill, Cameron's.
