Summary - The evil eye and the antidote.
Two women from Gruids came east with umbrellas and one of them looked at one of Kate Ross's mother's cows, and later the cow wouldn't eat. Her mother went to the woman's house, and put a stone in the middle of the fire there. The woman admitted that she "took the evil eye on the cow". As soon as the stone was put on the fire in Gruids the cow in the byre started to chew her cud. Calum Maclean explains that the malice was transferred from the cow to the stone.
