Summary
The young man tells his sweetheart that her parents oppose their marriage; she says she does not care. He then says her fortune is too small for him to marry her. She begins to weep; he dries her tears and says he was only testing her. They marry and they and their children live on kail brose [cabbage broth] in winter and neep [turnip] brose in summer.
Elsie Morrison says the usual last verse has the couple living in Forfar in winter and Montrose in summer. She does not remember where she heard this version.
