Summary
Hawker escaped burkers' dog by hiding in stack.
A young hawker from Edinburgh was going to a farm he knew to get lodgings for the night. About half-way there he realised he was being pursued by the burkers' coach. He ran on and hid in a stack at the farm. He made a hole in the stack to see through, and when the burkers' dog came sniffing round he reached through the hole and cut off its tail with a knife. The dog ran away howling and the burkers followed it. The young man kept the tail and took it to the police in Edinburgh, but he never heard any more about the matter.
