Summary
This is an example of a Hogmanay ballad. It refers to the custom of going round the house sun-wise reciting the ballad before the door was opened. It also refers to the 'Caisean Callaig' - the smouldering sheepskin brand which was passed three times sun-wise round the heads of the children and wife. It also mentions the Hogmanay bannocks given by the wife to the visitors.
