Summary
Communications between the cottage at Logan Fish Ponds and Stranraer in the early 20th century; estate management.
Visitors to the laird's fish pound in the 1920s came by horse-drawn carriage. The place was quite isolated then: locals had to walk to the toll road to get the carrier, Paterson's, cart to Stranraer, which took about three hours, and went three days a week. Helen Galloway's mother went to Stranraer twice a year. Children sat on straw at the back and women on the seat beside the driver. They would get back in the dark and have to walk down from the [Whinnyknowe?].
The estate trapper, Mattha [Matthew] [?], kept the rabbits down by trapping them every winter with steel traps. In the summer he made a living by fishing. Mention of a cottage that was burned down after an outbreak of scarlet fever and diphtheria in 1908 when many villagers died. The carter travelled between Port Logan and Stranraer. The horse was taken through a passage in his house to the top of the garden where it was stabled. Miss Galloway comments on the contentment of the simple life that people led before the world was opened up to them.
