Summary - Wigtownshire superstitions and Sabbath observance.
Grace MacQueen rejects superstition as Hielan [Highland], but agrees that local people were very superstitious in the past. Jack MacQueen's Aunt Jane wouldn't wear green as being unlucky - nothing to do with green [Catholic] versus orange [Protestant]. Sabbath observance in Mrs MacQueen's family was not strict, but her father would not let the children sew or play games on Sunday, although he was not a church-goer. Her mother considered it unlucky to cut hair or nails on Sundays. No girls were allowed to go to the jigging of the herring [catching herring by jerking on a wire frame fitted with fish-hooks], but were allowed onto the boats otherwise.
