Summary
The work of geologist Archibald Geikie.
Norman MacDonald gives an account of the life and work of geologist Archibald Geikie. He was born in Edinburgh in 1835. At one time he was head of the Geological Survey. His particular field of interest was volcanoes and their impact on the earth's form. He was the first geologist to claim that the rock found in Lewis and southern Harris was the hardest and the oldest rock in the world. He spent some time in Skye and gave a written account of the clearances that he witnessed in the Strath district.
