Summary

The name Bannatyne and its connection to Harris.

Chrissie Lawson explains the history of the name Bannatyne, which many people are surprised to learn is common in Harris. In the 18th century a son of MacLeod of Berneray married a Bannatyne from Rothesay. She gave their son her maiden surname. He went on to become a law lord at the Court of Session, and spent a lot of time in Harris. A number of local people began to give their sons the name Bannatyne, and there is even record of a girl being named Bannatyna.
