Summary
Shetland superstitions about fishing; sea terms.
Fishermen did not like to meet the minister, whom they called 'the upstander', on their way to the fishing. Cats were also unlucky and the shout of "cat" was enough to anger a fisherman. Women were also not supposed to mix with boats, and red and yellow-haired lasses were especially unlucky. Certain words were not be be repeated at sea. 'Kirk' [church] for instance was the 'beeny-hoose'.
