Summary

A discussion of ethnic prejudice faced by travelling people.

Lillis Ó Laoire talks of the difficulties faced by travelling people in Ireland. Residents are concerned at the effect of their presence on house values when they move into the towns. The travellers have fewer rights and a lower life expectancy. Some people are prejudiced against them. This derives from fear and ignorance. Travellers have not had much support from the authorities in the past.

Lachlan MacLeod describes the plight of Romanian gipsies. They are repressed by the authorities, although many are not poor in terms of wealth or culture. Most of the population do not want to have them in the towns, and are not concerned at being called racist.
