Summary
Possible site of an altar dug up on Foula.
Robbie Isbister was digging for road metal on the Wirly Knowe [hillock] at the south end of Foula. When he got to four feet down there was a layer of burned stones and then stones so greasy that he did not like to meddle with them. He filled in the hole and left it. An old Norwegian who used to visit Foula told him the mound would have been an altar, but did not know how long ago or what was burned there.
