Summary

Foula woman scared by mystery dog and its owner appearing at a mill.

An old woman was grinding corn [oats] one night at the Wirly Mill in the south end of Foula when she heard a knock at the door. She opened the door and a great big strange dog entered. She tried to put the animal out but it would only go as far as the doorstep, then yelp and spang [spring] back again. This happened several times, then an old woman came to the door and said, "Slip oot, my dug, lest it will be worse for you." She bundled the dog out the door and the pair disappeared. The old woman who was grinding corn got such a gluff [fright] she hurried home without stopping the mill.
