Summary
A shepherdess was turned into the Maiden Stone on the hill of Bennachie by the Devil.
Long ago, a girl tending her father's sheep on the hill of Bennachie was approached by a well-dressed man carrying a firlot of meal. He told her that if she could bake it before he returned he would make her the richest woman in the world. When he returned she had not quite finished. The man was the Devil, and he turned her into a big white stone, now known as the Maiden Stone. That was all that was to be seen when her father came looking for her.
Item Notes
A firlot was about 36 litres. The actual quantity varied from place to place ('The Concise Scots Dictionary' eds. Mairi Robinson et al, 1985, Appendices, p. 818).
