Summary
Making barley meal.
There used to be a kiln in the barn of every croft. People used to grind barley. The contributor explains in detail how the barley was processed in the kiln. When the barley was hard enough it was beaten with a flail and then riddled. The barley was then taken to the mill to be made into flour. The flour had to be winnowed.
Different things were made using the barley meal. People stopped grinding corn after the First World War. Dusary Mill was the last working mill in North Uist. It ceased thirty years ago [i.e. around 1932].
