Summary
How tweed and blankets were waulked in the contributor's youth.
The contributor remembers foot-waulking when she was younger, sometimes with four, six or eight women, although six was preferable. The tweed would be steeped in soap and urine to remove the oil from the loom. Two strong women would wring it out, otherwise a stick was used. The woman to whom the tweed belonged did not take part in the waulking. The contributor shows how the women worked their feet. They would sing waulking songs, particularly matchmaking songs. The contributor greatly enjoyed waulking. Tweed and blankets were waulked.
