Summary
Waulking tweed and blankets in Ness.
The contributor tells how she waulked tweed and blankets in Ness when she was younger. The women waulked tweed by hand on a special board, and blankets were waulked with their feet. When foot waulking, women sitting next to each other had to be of similar size. Those who were good at waulking were in much demand. Tweed was only used for making men's trousers. It was naturally grey in colour. Dyes such as indigo would be used on the blankets. Tweed was waulked to thicken the material, and then it would be washed in the river. The same types of songs were sung whether the women were waulking by hand or with their feet.
