Summary - Family and childhood of Lucy Stewart.

Lucy Stewart was one of fourteen children, of whom only she and one brother are still [1975] alive. She had to help her mother after her older sister married and left home. One of her brothers was a gold medallist piper, and one of her sisters was a fine pianist. She and her sister were nursed through childhood illnesses by Father Grant, because their mother had just had a baby. Lucy's mother married aged fifteen, and her father was sixteen. He was latterly paralysed by strokes, and was heavy and very difficult to care for. There were no district nurses to help. Lucy's family moved to Fetterangus in 1917. As children in Aberdeen she and her brother used to sing in the streets for money. Her brother was once caught by the police, but was let off because he was so young, only seven.
