Summary

Silver sand from Loch Enoch was used for making sharpening stones, and used to be sold round the farms by a pedlar.

Silver sand from Loch Enoch used to be used for making sharpening stones. There was a pedlar, nicknamed 'Silver Sand', who went to the loch and loaded sand into bags on either side of his pony and then put it in a small cart and went round the farms selling it. Robbie Murray made his own sharpening stone by coating a piece of black oak that had been in the ground for about a hundred years with Archangel tar and dipping it in the silver sand.
