Summary

Guisers came round at Hogmanay and said a rhyme, then sang or recited and got cakes.

Guisers knocked on the doors at Hogmanay and said a rhyme:

Get up auld wife and shake yer feathers,
Dinna think that we are beggars.
We're only bairnies come to play,
Get up and gie's oor Hogmanay.

They would be given cake and maybe a cup of tea. They went in groups of two or three, only in their own area, because other guisers would be going round other areas. Wat Ramage recalls the guisers coming to a farm. They would sing a song or recite a bit of poetry, but they were mostly interested in getting some cake.
