Summary
A Traveller is entertained in an empty, ruined house.
Alec Stewart was walking on the road to Edinburgh in pouring rain, soaked and hungry. A car came along, and a mother and daughter gave him a lift. They took him to their big house and gave him something to eat and drink. He admired the lady's ring, leaving it on the mantelpiece. Later, he stopped at a nearby pub. He spoke about the house and the ladies, and was told that the house had been a ruin for five years. A man took him back there in his car. The house was indeed in ruins – but the ring was on the mantelpiece where he had left it.
