Summary

A literal interpretation of the Lord's Prayer and a clever ruse.

A tramp came to a minister's house, forewarned that the man was mean, and asked to be taught the Lord's Prayer. The minister asked him to repeat, "Our father". The tramp pointed out that since the Lord was the father of them both, he and minister must be brothers, and asked for new boots and something to eat. The minister fed him and gave him a note for the cobbler. He took the best boots in the shop. When the minister went to pay the cobbler, he asked him if he could recite the Lord's Prayer. Since the cobbler, the minister and the tramp were all brothers, the cobbler was to pay half the cost of his brother's boots.
