Summary

Tradition surrounding a place name on Pabay and a church in Uig.

Tradition relating to Rubha na Croise on the island of Pabay, off the west coast of Lewis. Monks used to live on the island. The remains of their church can still [1965] be seen on the east coast of Pabay. There is a church at Baile na Cille called the Big Church, as it was roofed with slate in the time that Lady Hood MacKenzie owned Lewis.

Item Notes

Mary Elizabeth Frederica MacKenzie (known as Lady Hood MacKenzie, 1783-1862) was the last of the Seaforth MacKenzies to be proprietor of the Isle of Lewis. She inherited the estate from her father in 1815.
