Summary
A man saves his soul from the Devil in a contest of wit.
The Devil offered a man wealth, health, prosperity. After seven years, if he could beat the Devil in a contest of wit, he could keep his soul. When the Devil came back, the man got a pail and knocked holes in the bottom. He told the Devil he would ask him a question which he must answer truthfully. He took down his trousers and farted in the pail. He asked the Devil to point to the hole it came out off. The Devil looked at the pail and said, "It's this one." But the man said it was his arsehole.
Stanley Robertson says that this is a Traveller story.
