Summary

Dr MacAskill drowned and a tailor survived when their boat sank.

Dr MacAskill, the son of Rev. Malcolm, farmed Kildonan. He was returning from a sale in Arisaig with some cattle when his ship sank. A tailor on board held on to a cow's tail. It swam ashore and the tailor was saved. When they tried to get the doctor into the dinghy, it capsized. He was a heavily-built man and he drowned. This happened around 1817. The cow was found on the west side of Eigg facing Rum, from where it had come originally. The spot is called Leathad na Bà Rumaich.
