Summary
A lament for John Garve MacLeod of Raasay. The poet will never be able to sing a happy song again. Though the anchor of his boat was strong, the sea was stronger.
Item Notes
Recorded at the Royal National Mòd. John Garve MacLeod was drowned in April 1671. He was returning from Lewis after attending a christening feast in the house of the Earl of Seaforth when his galley sank in a storm. This song was said to be composed by his sister. Tradition has it that she composed a lament for him every Friday for a year, but only three or four of them are still known.
