Summary - Quarries on Berneray and North Uist.
John Murdo Morrison from The Harris Hotel explains how stones from the Berneray quarry were used in the building of the hotel. His uncles, James and Donald Alick, were involved in the work in 1922-23. This was the same kind of stone as used for Amhuinnsuidhe Castle and the War Memorial in Tarbert, and was used for the lintels and frontage. He still has the steel wedges that were used for splitting the rock.
Margaret MacLeod from North Uist tells how there were at least three small quarries on the island at one time - one at Scolpaig and two at Griminish. People used them for stone which was broken up and used for road-building in earlier times. The work was hard and the wages poor.
