Summary

How barley meal was produced in North Uist.

Barley corn was threshed to remove the grain from it. The grain was winnowed and the kiln was prepared. The heat had to be right to harden the grain. The grain was then beaten on a hard floor and cleaned. The grain would then be sent to the mill to be ground. The miller would get a quarter-peck from every sack of grain, as payment. Sometimes, people would prepare meal in their own houses using a quern.

The mill was at Dusary. A detailed account is given of how the mill worked. It was powered by a water-wheel. The contributor also describes the operation of a kiln. They would use hard black peat for heat.
