A missionary returned from India. He was a very religious man and also a very good doctor and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. His arrival in Shetland coincided with the arrival of the new minister.
He was called to attend to an old lady. He rolled down her bedclothes and conducted a very thorough examination. Afterwards, he sat looking very grave and offered up a prayer. The woman asked him if he was the new doctor or the new minister. She was relieved to hear he was the doctor, as the minister would have had no right to do what he had been doing.
