Summary
Sources of Charles Reid's collection of ballads; family history; his singing and repertoire.
Charles Reid wrote down a collection of ballads, with input from his mother. Tony Wales recorded him singing them, on behalf of Kenneth Goldstein. Talk of Mr Reid's singing and repertoire. He learned the songs from his mother by the time he was ten. He actively sought to understand them and was the only one of the family who learned them.
His mother got her songs from her mother, who lived with them. She [the grandmother?] learned songs from farmservants living in chamers [rooms on the farm] when she worked on Buchan farms. She associated the songs with the individuals from whom she had learned them.
