Summary
A local verse about a minister in Huntly who preached the same sermon repeatedly when invited to neighbouring parishes.
A minister was ordained in Huntly at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It was the custom for neighbouring parishes to invite a new minister to preach on the fast day before communion. Eventually he was discovered to have preached the same sermon at nineteen different parishes. Charles Reid reads a rhyme that Major-General Reid, the son of one of the neighbouring ministers, wrote about it. The sermon was about a woman and her vessel. In the verse she and her vessel (bowie, cogie) are driven from one place to another by the preacher.
Item Notes
The subject of the sermon was probably 2 Kings 4: 1-7, the story of Elisha and the widow's oil.
