Summary
The precise work expected by Buchan farmers: stooking corn.
Charles Reid praises Buchan farmers and the quality of the pasture, though in the past the farmers were rather grasping. Mr Reid relates an anecdote to illustrate how meticulous the farmers were. He started work at the Howe of Rora at the age of thirteen. When he was hoeing turnips the farmer pointed out another farm: when the harvest came, that would be the landmark for setting the stooks [shocks of grain], to get the best use of the sun for drying them.
