At the age of thirteen and weighing six stone nine, Charles was sent out to work: he was granted an exemption from schooling and was moyened on [recommended to] the Howe of Rora. He rose at 4.45 in the morning and at harvest time worked a ten or eleven hour day. He got his next place, at Auchtylair of Auchnagatt, at a feeing market [ends abruptly].

Item Notes

The school leaving age had recently been raised to fourteen, so Mr Reid's parents needed official permission for him to leave before his fourteenth birthday (which fell in November).
