Summary

Cattle rearing in Balranald, North Uist.

Somhairle was a well known herdsman at Balranald. The estate had a special herd of Highland cattle and Balranald insisted that any who bought their cows would not sire them with a bull. He once sold four cows and three years later bought a bull from Glasgow. When he brought it home, Somhairle recognised it as one of their own stock. Balranald found out that the farmer had not been true to his word and he refunded the price of the bull, which was sent back to the mainland. Some information about Somhairle's family.
