Title - Reading of extracts from the diary of a 19th century Pentlan...
Contributors - Andrew Gibson
Reporters - Sheila Scott
Item Person - Laidlaw, William
Summary - Reading of extracts from the diary of a 19th century Pentland herd.
Andrew Gibson reads copied extracts from the diary of William Laidlaw, shepherd in Wakefield. It lists those present at a herds' gathering [herds' supper] upon the restoration of the limehouse at Baddinsgill in 1882. There are descriptions of the weather and farming and herding conditions in different years, and an account of a severe storm, on 20th May 1887, comparable only to storms in 1859 and 1886. Ewes and lambs had to be dragged out of wreaths [snowdrifts] up to five feet deep, but fortunately the lambs were old enough by then to survive. The writer dubs it the 'Jubilee Blast' after Queen Victoria's Jubilee.
Account of a valuation, when a farm was taken over by the laird of Cringletie in 1904. Account of fires getting out of control during heather burning in 1899.
