Drovers, cows and the evil eye.
The contributor can remember when the drovers used to come in late autumn, and cattle-sales being held at the schoolhouse. Some people believed the drovers had the evil eye.
When the evil eye was put on a cow, a sixpence was put in the bottom of the milking-pail. If someone praised your cow, you had to praise it more to counteract the evil eye.
