Title - Shetland crofters' seaweed rights.
Contributors - George Gear
Reporters - Prof. Michael Jones; Venke Olsen

Summary - Shetland crofters' seaweed rights.

At one time any of the proprietors of the five crofts around As Wick could go down to the south wick [bay] and take as much seaweed for their cattle as they wanted, as it was on the local laird's foreshore. No one gathers it nowadays as the ground is all given over to sheep farming. If seaweed were to be gathered now [1986], permission would have to be asked from the local landlord [the crofts having been sold off to the tenants.]
